Fraud Trial: Peter Okoye Accused of Lying About University Degree and Music Royalties
Lagos, Nigeria – June 5, 2025
New developments unfolded today in the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, where Nigerian music sensation Peter Okoye is embroiled in a high-profile fraud trial. During a heated session, the court was presented with evidence challenging Okoye’s claims about his academic background and financial dealings within Northside Music Limited.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Clement Onwuenwunor, representing the defense, revealed that Okoye falsely asserted he graduated from the University of Abuja. Court documents, however, indicate that Okoye dropped out after his first year, contradicting his official statements to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
When questioned, Okoye claimed he left University of Abuja at 300 level and transferred to the University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt. Yet, he admitted he could not produce any proof of graduation from the latter institution.
The court proceedings grew tense as Okoye’s frustration surfaced. Justice Alexander Owoeye intervened multiple times to maintain decorum, reminding Okoye to respect the defense counsel and the court.
Additionally, the trial spotlighted discrepancies regarding ownership of Northside Music Limited. Okoye initially stated that Jude Okoye’s wife held 80% of the company shares, with Jude owning 20%. However, official Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) records revealed the opposite: Jude holds 80%, while his wife owns 20%.
Further examination showed that contrary to Okoye’s earlier testimony claiming no access to the company’s bank accounts, both Peter and his twin brother Paul were listed as category B signatories, granting them certain transactional rights.
Financial documents from Ecobank exposed royalty payments from Lex Records to Northside Entertainment between 2012 and 2017. These payments, which Okoye claimed ignorance of, were confirmed by bank statements admitted as evidence by the presiding judge.
The court has scheduled continuation of the trial for October 23 and November 10, 2025, when further cross-examinations will take place.
This case continues to draw attention, highlighting issues of transparency and accountability within the music industry.
